Nurses ask federal government to stop Southern Cross Care changes

A delegation of nurses is in Canberra today to lobby the Albanese Government to intervene in mass redundancies across Tasmania by aged care provider Southern Cross Care.

The facilities are introducing a new ‘Household Model’ of care, with changes to the training and responsibilities of staff.  CEO CEO Robyn Boyd says the revised care strategy is a direct response to the Aged Care Royal Commission recommendations, the Federal Government funding and care 5-year reform agenda as well as resident feedback.

But the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation says that this has left over 50 enrolled nurses without employment.

ANMF Tasmanian Branch Secretary Emily Shepherd has said it’s worrying to see ENs replaced with lesser-trained carers.

“They’ll be replaced with carers who’ve done an 8 hour course,” Emily said.  “We’re concerned about the impact that it’ll have on the aged care residents.”

Federal Aged Care Minister Anika Wells has already urged Southern Cross Care to reconsider the changes.
