Police renew plea for bike safety

Tasmania Police have renewed their recent call for greater awareness among all road users, following the death on Saturday of a fifth motorcyclist this year.

The most recent fatality was a 47-year-old Western Australian man, who was killed early on Saturday afternoon on Henty Road near Pyramid Creek in the state's west.

Acting Inspector Ian Mathewson said it's 'totally unacceptable' that all five deaths on the state's roads this year have involved motorcyclists.

"We’re calling on riders to protect themselves and other road users by riding responsibly, ensuring they’re licensed and their motorbike is registered and roadworthy, and by
wearing appropriate safety gear.

"It’s for their own safety," Acting Inspector Mathewson said.

"Our message for all road users – both motorcyclists and motorists - is to slow down and share the road – it’s for everyone’s safety."

Tasmania's road toll stands at five, half the figure for the same period last year.
