2026 Tasmania Chinese Film Week
To further promote people-to-people exchanges between China and Australia and enhance the understanding of Chinese culture and contemporary China among communities in Tasmania, the 2026 Tasmania Chinese Film Week, hosted by the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Melbourne, will be held in Hobart and Launceston, Tasmania, from 24 July to 31 July 2026. Through the medium of film, this year’s Film Week will present a selection of outstanding Chinese films to local communities, university students and staff, cultural organisations, business associations, media representatives and film enthusiasts across Tasmania. The program features a diverse range of genres, including family drama, historical drama, wuxia action, racing comedy and crime thriller. These films aim to showcase the development of Chinese cinema, the diversity of Chinese society and the emotional depth of Chinese storytelling. Film is an important art form that transcends language and cultural boundaries. It serves as a bridge for mutual understanding and cultural dialogue. The Tasmania Chinese Film Week will provide local audiences with an opportunity to appreciate Chinese films, experience Chinese culture and engage with contemporary Chinese stories. It will also serve as an open and inclusive platform for cultural exchange and community engagement between China and Australia. This year’s Film Week will feature seven screenings across Hobart and Launceston. The Hobart Opening Ceremony will be held on 24 July at Hobart State Cinema, featuring Dear You. The Launceston Closing Ceremony will be held on 31 July at Village Cinema Launceston, also featuring Dear You. With sincere and delicate storytelling, it reflects the memories and emotional bonds of ordinary families through changing times. 1911 / The 1911 Revolution The film focuses on the 1911 Revolution, a significant event in modern Chinese history. Through the experiences of Sun Yat-sen, Huang Xing and other revolutionaries, it presents the historical process of China’s pursuit of national renewal, social progress and development. Blades of the Guardians Set against the vast desert landscape, the film follows Dao Ma, an escort who becomes involved in conflicts among various forces during a dangerous mission. Combining wuxia, action and adventure, the film reflects the distinctive appeal of Chinese martial arts cinema. Pegasus 3 Continuing the spirit of passion and determination in the racing genre, the film follows Zhang Chi as he returns to the racing world in a new role, facing challenges, achieving personal growth and strengthening team spirit. Unexpected Family The film tells a warm and touching story of several strangers who, despite having no blood relation, form an improvised family through an unexpected encounter and gradually build understanding, companionship and emotional connection. The Shadow’s Edge The film centres on a tense pursuit between the police and a high-tech criminal group. Combining action, crime and suspense, it presents a contest of intelligence, trust and courage.
