Bob takes off

What's expected to be a three-and-a-half-week attempt to fly around Australia solo from Devonport is officially underway.

Kindred teenager Bob Bramley has taken off in his bid to become the youngest person to achieve a full circumnavigation, with the current four-day forecast indicating fair weather for the first part of the voyage.

Dozens of his Don College mates joined family, media and well wishers in seeing him off this morning.

The 16-year-old is looking to raise awareness of youth mental health.

"Some of the days are quite long days, some of them are short days," he told Darren Kerwin.

"Today I'll probably fly through til about five or six o'clock, getting as far as Merimbula, then other days there's only sort of one leg at a time, so there might only be an hour's flying or two hours flying in the day."
