Police in Tasmania’s Northern District say they detected more than 260 motorists speeding, during a week of targeted enforcement focused on the fatal five driving behaviours.

The operation last week targeted rural roads and high-risk school zones – more than 600 roadside alcohol and drug tests were conducted.

Tasmania Police says despite advanced warning of increased police activity, its officers detected the significant number of speeding offences, as well as drivers distracted by using mobile phones, who were affected by alcohol or drugs, who failed to wear seatbelts or drive while disqualified.

It’s further alleged 15 drivers returned positive oral fluid tests, 4 were caught drink driving, 31 using mobile phones, 10 not wearing seatbelts, and 5 were driving while disqualified. Those 5 drivers were arrested and charged, and will face court over the alleged offences
