Boosted speed cams go live

Speed cameras that can detect mobile phone use and people not wearing their seatbelts are now live in Tasmania.

They’ve been unveiled in Hobart but will roll out statewide.

The cameras are set to pop up at hundreds of locations, intended to encourage Tasmanians to belt up and put their phones away before driving.

The fine for not wearing a seatbelt or using a mobile phone will set you back $390 and three demerit points.

The penalties are about to go live as warnings disappear and fines fill mailboxes.

“These cameras are important because distraction and seatbelt non-compliance are a factor in 24 and nine per cent respectively of Tasmania’s fatal and serious injury crashes,” said Transport Minister Michael Ferguson.

“Already this year we had seen 18 lives needlessly lost on our roads.”
