Dorset councillors have been suspended by the Local Government Minister while a Board of Inquiry takes place.

Former Burnie City Council General Manager, Andrew Wardlaw has today been appointed as Commissioner for Dorset Council by the Tasmanian Governor.

“Andrew has worked for 20 years in senior roles in local government, including nine years as the general manager of Burnie City Council,” Minister Street said.

“I am confident that Andrew’s judgement and experience will bring stability to the Dorset community during this challenging time.

“I encourage all members of the community, council employees and councillors of Dorset to consider the opportunities that the Board brings to support positive change within their community.”

Minister Street said “It is important to note that my decision to suspend the Council does not imply any wrongdoing on behalf of any councillor.

“The decision creates an environment where the Inquiry can proceed without distraction.”

The Minister recently announced the Board of Inquiry in response to the Director of Local Government’s investigations into the council revealing allegations of widespread statutory non-compliance and failings of good governance.
