Emergency Services Minister to join stair climb challenge

Police and Emergency Services Minister and Braddon MP Felix Ellis will get some hands-on experience in his portfolio next month when he joins Tasmanian firies for the Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb.

Mr Elllis will be part of the Devonport Fire Brigade team and will climb 28 stories of the Crown Metropol building using the stairs and carrying 25 kilograms of turn-out gear and breathing apparatus on his back.

The charity event has set a goal of raising $700,000 for the Peter McCallum Cancer Foundation, Lifeline, and the Triple Zero Foundation and has attracted career and volunteer firefighters from all over Australia.

Mr Ellis, who was a plumber before entering politics, will carry the name and photo of Fire Department of New York firefighter Bruce Gary, who also worked as a part-time plumber, was one of the 343 firefighters killed in the September 11 terrorist attack in 2001.
