Tasmanian federal politicians have come together to release a joint statement calling on Gillon McLachan to withdraw the requirement for our state to build a stadium in order to earn an AFL license.
It comes as the AFL boss is expected to visit Hobart on Thursday for a meeting with key stakeholders, before stepping down from his CEO position in April.
The letter, seen below, is signed by Bridget Archer MP, Senator Wendy Askew, Senator Claire Chandler, Senator the Hon Jonno Duniam, Senator Jacquie Lambie, Senator Nick McKim, Senator Tammy Tyrell, Gavin Pearce MP, Andrew Wilkie MP and Senator Peter Whish-Wilson.
Hey Gillon, here’s an idea: give Tasmania the team without making us build a stadium
Tasmania is one of the founding football states and has a long history of making rich contributions to the national game.
That is why we deserve a team of our own without having to make taxpayers pay for a stadium – something no other state has had to do to get a team.
We are putting politics aside to make this plea: give Tasmania a licence, let us have our dream.
