The state government has deferred debate on the Firearms Amendment Bill after requests from Members of the Parliament for more time.
Police Minister Felix Ellis says it’s in good faith to ensure the parliament has more time to consider the bill.
The bill would deliver a National Firearms Register, increase penalties for stealing firearms, and impose madatory minimum jail terms for being in the possession of a stolen gun.

There is no cap on the number of firearms a person can own – something that had been pushed for by Tasmania’s Police Commissioner.
