Is the Devil Really Tasmanian?

New research out of the University of New South Wales has found evidence that Tasmanian devils lived in the Pilbara region of Western Australia for around 45,000 years.

Dr Tim Churchill is one of the team who identified two ancient devil bones from Juukan 2 rockshelter: part of a jaw dating to between 6,900 and 7,300 years ago, and part of a tooth believed to be between about 42,500 and 47,100 years old.

He says these specimens, combined with thousands of other animal and human remains, suggest devils scavenged around human camps for thousands of years before dying out on the mainland.
