Kenny Beck to rise again

Premier Jeremy Rockliff has given an update on much-loved North-West Coast icon The Big Spud, which recently crashed to the ground in high winds.

Affectionately known as Kenny Beck, the fibreglass fixture on a pole at Sassafras was erected by the Premier’s family in 1982 to promote a roadside fruit and veg outlet.

Mr Rockliff says he’s been overwhelmed by the reaction to Kenny’s demise and has promised he will return.

“I found a replacement pole when I had a bit of a scout around on the farm last weekend,” he said.

“We will design how that is replaced and Kenny will get a very serious paint job as well.”

“My father has said maybe before Christmas – I think that’s a bit ambitious, so maybe in the New Year.”

“I want to thank all Tasmanians and other people who reached out to support Kenny – he is a bit smashed in at the moment, but he will return,” Mr Rockliff said.
