Police have issued a stern reminder about obeying road closures and dangerous road warnings, after three tourists crashed their car in Tasmania’s highlands on Tuesday night.

The triple zero call came through shortly before 6pm, after the trio ran off the road in their Mercedes sedan due to ice and snow.

Police say the Highland Lakes Road had been closed due to safety concerns amid the weather conditions.

The group was not injured in the crash, but authorities say it highlights why road closures and warnings must be listened to.

“Ignoring road closure signs puts lives at risk, and also risks the safety of emergency services who have to respond in those conditions,” saysBridgewater Inspector Marco Ghedini.

“Disregarding road closure signage may also impact on a vehicle’s insurance claim and the terms and conditions of rental car hire.”

Highland Lakes Road is still currently closed to all traffic from Liffey to Miena due to severe icy conditions at Haulage Hill.
