NSW govt to fund medicinal cannabis probe

The NSW government is set to tip more than $3 million into research on the medicinal cannabis supply chain at a secret facility in regional NSW.

Agriculture Minister Adam Marshall said the study would probe "all aspects of the supply chain", from growing conditions to chemical analysis.

The industry-led, $10 million study would also involve federal government, Southern Cross University, the University of Newcastle, and private business.

Mr Marshall said the funding would enable the NSW Department of Primary Industries to triple the number of cannabis researchers.

"Through this study, the NSW government will build on its ongoing research into the agronomic parameters for cannabis plants and finding the ideal conditions for producing high quality, year-round, consistent medicinal cannabis products," Mr Marshall said in a statement on Friday.

The NSW government was the first Australian state to receive Commonwealth permission to grow medicinal cannabis for research, beginning in April.
