Hobart schools on track for co-ed

The State's education Department says the transition of Hobart's last single-sex public schools to a co-ed model is on track for next year.

There's been a mixed reaction to the changes for Ogilvie and New Town Highs, welcomed by some parents and carers while others say it'll unfairly limit choice.

A new update reveals all year 7 students will attend Ogilvie next year, while years 8 to 10 will remain at their current schools, which will become fully co-educational in 2023.

Planning's underway on what the new unified school will be called, as well as uniform design.

Ogilvie and New Town will become co-campuses under the Hobart City Partner Schools model linking them with Elizabeth College.

"To prepare for the establishment of the HCPS model, $1.6 million has been allocated for essential projects, including co-educational toilet facilities and refurbished general learning areas at Ogilve and New Town campuses," said the Education Department update.

"These works will be completed before the 2022 school year."

Refurbishment and redevelopment of Ogilve, New Town and Elizabeth College is due to commence in late 2023.
