Woman pinged for border breach

coronavirus update

There's a stark warning to travellers attempting to breach Fortress Tasmania.

A woman who arrived in Launceston on a flight from Sydney at the weekend has become the first to receive the now-doubled fine of $1557.

The Tasmanian, aged in her 70s, was fined after her application for a G2G pass was rejected but she continued her travel to the state anyway.

Authorities say travellers from high-risk areas like NSW should not assume they will be granted Essential Traveller status or have access to hotel quarantine until they receive approval.

Last week, Premier Peter Gutwien announced penalities for flouting the border entry rules would be increased, in an attempt to crackdown on people fleeing mainland lockdowns for the island state.
