Crash leaves one dead, child seriously injured
A woman is dead and a child seriously hurt after a two-car highway crash in central Tasmania.
The collision occurred at an intersection of the Midland Highway at Melton Mowbray just before midday.
The child, who was travelling in a separate car to the woman, was been flown by the rescue helicopter to the Royal Hobart Hospital and remains in a serious but stable condition.
Police say early investigations suggest the woman driving a Toyota Corolla failed to give way to a Mazda utility as she was turning right onto the the Midland Highway heading south.
Acting Inspector Phil Curtis says speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors.
"We don't believe speed, alcohol or drugs were involved in the accident. It appears the Toyota Corolla has failed to give way to the vehicle travelling north," he said.
Anyone who saw the vehicles prior to the crash, or the smash itself, is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
