New Royalties for West bid
The West Coast Mayor is welcoming the local Labor Party branch's bid to resurrect a Royalties for the Regions program to return mining wealth to the area.
The then-Labor state government rejected a similar proposal in 2009, arguing it would rip the west off in real terms.
“Conference believes that such a policy could see 25 per cent of all mining royalty payments returned to the west coast for social and economic investment," said the branch motion quoted in the Mercury.
Phil Vickers says it would only be worthwhile if it resulted in a net gain for the region.
"Good on 'em for putting the motion up to their annual conference, and I wish it every success, I suppose," he said.
"I wouldn't want such a scheme to disadvantage us; we do extremely well from both state and federal governments, and from the grants commission."
