Jeanswest in strife

A hasty search is underway for a buyer for troubled retailer Jeanswest.

The administrator for Jeanswest is indicating it'll temporarily continue operating the chain, while it urgently assesses the business.

A new statement from the retailer verified 37 of its 146 Australian shops, reportedly including the one in Hobart's Elizabeth Street Mall, are poised for closure.

40 staff are currently employed at 7 outlets in Tasmania, spread across Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie.

Jeanswest started in Perth in 1972; its parent company is now Hong Kong company Glorious Sun.

In total, 263 employees around the country are set to be impacted.
