Improved court security ordered

A 24 year stalemate surrounding police providing magistrate court security appears to be heading towards a resolution.

The work health safety regulator has ordered improvements to screening and police officer safety.

Police Association President Colin Riley wants resolution to officers being required to remove their personal security equipment for court.

"Since 1996, there are numerous examples where our members have been called upon to assist court security which have resulted in police officers with broken bones, damage to their limbs, cuts and so on, we either have all our accroutrements to be able to respond in the court environment or court security does it and their isn't an expectation on our members to respond."
