New police fine powers
Tasmania Police are now able to dish out on-the-spot fines for those flouting pandemic restrictions.
Previously, flagrant offenders could only be arrested or issued with a court summons.
Police, ADF and SES personnel have been busy conducting 13,400 quarantine checks, most of them in the state's virus-hit northwest.
“While the vast majority of Tasmanians continue to do the right thing by keeping their physical distance and there have been encouraging signs in our state, now is not the time to be complacent about COVID-19," said Acting Deputy Commissioner Jonathan Higgins.
He says the new fines will sting.
"$756 for an individual, and for a body corporate, $4998," he said.
