Police welcome latest ice bust

A man and a woman are due in Devonport Magistrates Court on Friday morning, police alleging the pair tried to smuggle half a kilo of ice into the state on the Spirit of Tasmania.

Officers working with Biosecurity Tasmania and TT Line personnel intercepted two vehicles as they disembarked the ferry on Thursday.

Searches allegedly uncovered around half a million dollars of the illicit substance.

The 31-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman are facing trafficking charges.

"I’m confident that the excellent work undertaken by police and our partners has disrupted the activities of individuals who seek to exploit vulnerable members of our community for their own personal benefit,” said Detective Inspector Kate Chambers.

“Our message to those criminals bringing these dangerous drugs into our state is that Tasmania Police, with the support of our partners, will hold you to account."

It's the latest seizure in an operation which has now taken 15,000 deals worth of ice off the streets in less than three weeks.
